Blockage of the retinal circulation frequently related to systemic hypertension leads to retinal hemorrhage, edema (swelling) and neovascularization.  There is an increased risk of intraocular hemorrhage and glaucoma (high eye pressure). Treatments include laser photocoagulation, intraocular medicine injections and vitrectomy surgery.
